#18 Wingless

Created by Abby Taylor, 14 years old,
Pakuranga College

“Wingless” was inspired by the Māori legend, “How the kiwi lost its wings”. One side of the kiwi looks like an x-ray, emphasising the kiwi’s lack of working wings. The other side is painted as a normal kiwi. “I drew inspiration from the legend of how the kiwi sacrificed its wings to protect the ground,” says Abby. “I incorporated wing bones and the letters 'INRI,' typically found on crucifixes, symbolising self-sacrifice."

When Abby heard her design had won from more than 1800 entries she was “surprised, but very happy. Realising that I have the ability to do something like this is very cool.”
