#14 Eye of the Kiwi

“Eye of the Kiwi” portrays the good fight of conservation.
On one side of this sculpture, the eye speech bubble represents the kōrero of kiwi conservation: seeing, hearing and understanding. The other side, the cradled wing hands, represents the mahi of kiwi conservation: the doing, giving the plan flight.
And of course if you’re heading out to bring awareness to this beautiful native bird of Aotearoa, why not do it in style rocking boots ‘n bling!
“Eye of the Kiwi” is here to help raise awareness for our national icon, reminding each of us why the kiwi is so important and why we must protect it. “Eye of the Kiwi” is also here to inspire and attract the attention of the next generation to take interest, get curious, and ask questions about conservation.

Meet SWEATS
SWEATS is the studio of multidisciplinary artist, Pierre Hadlow. Bold and primal, SWEATS’ art consists principally of expressionistic figures and objects. Beginning as abstraction, his portraits are brought to life through eyes, lips and teeth, which emerge from vibrant colours that explode the senses. The effect taps into a feeling of synaesthesia that opens up the viewer to explore the human experience – an experience that is not only multifaceted but unique to the individual.
Shifting between studio, street and screen, SWEATS employs strong contrasts through popping palettes, striking stencil features, and deconstructed typography to explore colour and form. He works under the influence of music, using its physicality to generate spontaneous dynamic movement and gestural mark-making to build textural layers into artworks that contain echos of distressed faxes and photocopies. This process remains grounded in undercurrents of pop culture that allow him to hold on to a playful naivety.
