He Reo mō te Kiwi

He Reo mō te Kiwi (A voice for the kiwi) is a sculptural work that gives voice to an endangered taonga species through layered language and colour. Painted entirely with te reo Māori kupu, the kiwi’s form becomes a vessel of meaning, carrying values of guardianship, love, healing, breath, and life force. The words are not presented as explanations, but as texture and rhythm, encouraging close looking and quiet discovery. Through this work, the protection of the kiwi and the preservation of language are held as inseparable acts of care, reminding us that what we choose to safeguard—whether species, culture, or land—shapes the wellbeing of future generations.
Proceeds from the sale of this sculpture will be donated to the NZ Open Charitable Trust.
Meet Sandi
Sandra Rae Young is a painter who works across a range of mediums, drawing inspiration from the world around her and the experiences she encounters through her other creative pursuits. Coming to art later in life, she approaches her practice with curiosity, attentiveness, and a strong respect for process. While painting remains central to her work, He Reo m te Kiwi marks her first exploration into sculptural form, extending her painted language into three dimensions as a way to explore observation, storytelling, and care for the natural world

The New Zealand Open Charitable Trust is driven by two core purposes:
To support the community and environment in the region that hosts the New Zealand Open, fostering stronger ties between the event.
To champion involvement in the game of golf, both regionally and across New Zealand, through initiatives that promote participation, development, events, and effective administration.
With initial seed funding provided by its founders and supporters, the New Zealand Open Charitable Trust is now focused on building sustainable annual contributions from players, partners, and attendees. These efforts will help grow an enduring endowment fund and enable the Trust to make meaningful charitable distributions year after year.
