Kirsty McMahon + Kiwi in Bloom
Describe the inspiration behind your kiwi.
I wanted Kiwi in Bloom to be a colourful showcase of New Zealand's unique endemic flora and fauna, which I believe should be treasured. My art is inspired by nature's wonders, and my kiwi is a reflection of this.
Describe the design process. How did your idea turn into a kiwi?
I decided on a grey background to represent the bleak industrial world that humans are creating. I thought this would also serve to make the colours of the flowers really pop. I paint a lot of native New Zealand flowers, so I knew from the get-go that they would be featured. I didn't draw up an exact plan for where the flowers would be situated, but instead set about painting them free hand onto the sculpture.
What's your favourite thing about your sculpture? What makes it super cool?
I love the vibrancy of the colours! I just adore all the colours of our native flora.
Why did you say 'yes' to joining the Kiwi Art Trail?
I am a fan of sculpture trails and enjoyed last year's Kiwi Art Trail. I am also a fan of our native birds, so being part of an initiative that assists in their conservation was a no-brainer for me!
What do you like about kiwi and kiwi conservation? Why is the kiwi important to you?
They are such unique little birds that are a part of our national identity. It would be an absolute tragedy if they were to become extinct.
Have you ever seen a kiwi?
I have only seen them at Auckland Zoo and Butterfly Creek. I hope to someday see them in their natural habitat.
Why do you do what you do? What inspired you to become an artist?
I don't remember a time in my life when I didn't enjoy creative pursuits. Being an artist means engaging in what brings my soul joy, and in a practical sense, it also means I can have the flexibility to be available for my daughter.
