GLDN KIWI by Weston Frizzell
Weston Frizzell is the collaborative identity of artists Otis Frizzell and Mike Weston. Bold, innovative and often controversial, this "hi-performance art partnership” has its roots in street art and pop culture.
Describe the inspiration behind your kiwi.
GLDN KIWI is inspired by New Zealand’s once favourite national lottery, The Golden Kiwi.
Describe the design process. How did your idea turn into a kiwi?
We found some great reference of old, battered gold bars on the internet, so we knew the finish we wanted before we even started. We really wanted it to look like solid god, and not like it was painted with gold paint.
What's your favourite thing about your sculpture? What makes it super cool?
I love the way the dents and marks really help to make our Kiwi looks solid and heavy. The ’stamped’ ID and logo is the detail that we love the most.
Why did you say 'yes' to joining the Kiwi Art Trail?
This is our third year on The Kiwi Art Trail. It’s always fun and challenging coming up with a new idea. We always try and do something that will look amazing, but are also aware that we want to to sell, because after all, this is a fund raising project.
What do you like about kiwi and kiwi conservation? Why is the kiwi important to you?
The Kiwi is our national bird! We’re stoked to be able to do something to help support such a great cause.
Have you ever seen a kiwi?
We’ve seen kiwi at the zoo, but would LOVE to see one… Or a bunch of ‘em, out in the wild.
Why do you do what you do? What inspired you to become an artist?
I (Mike W.) have always admired Otis. He’s such an amazing artist, so I really wanted to be like him. We have worked together for over twenty years, and during that time he was kind enough to teach me how to paint.
