Alana Mays + Kiwi in Eden

Alana Mays is a digital and traditional artist based in the Wairarapa.

Describe the inspiration behind your kiwi.

I was inspired by the Garden of Eden, as it was a heavenly sanctuary where animals could dwell in perfect peace.

Describe the design process. How did your idea turn into a kiwi?

I didn’t have a solid plan for my concept, just a vision that evolved into something different from my original idea. Initially, I intended to paint forest trees and birds, but then my paintbrush led me to paint flowers instead. I wanted to capture close-ups of the garden’s beauty.

What's your favourite thing about your sculpture? What makes it super cool?

My favourite aspect of the sculpture, aside from its message, is the contrast between the dark green forest foliage and the colourful flowers. I’ve also hidden a camouflaged small bird within the artwork, waiting to be spotted.

Why did you say 'yes' to joining the Kiwi Art Trail?

I first spotted the Kiwi Art Trail in Auckland last year and thought how fabulous it would be to contribute my creative flair to the kiwi. I also love the challenge of painting on different surfaces.

What do you like about kiwi and kiwi conservation? Why is the kiwi important to you?

The kiwi is the hero bird of New Zealand, and I’d love to see them spreading and thriving throughout the country. They’re such cool birds that I wish lived in my backyard.

Have you ever seen a kiwi?

Yes, at Pūkaha Mount Bruce. I had the pleasure of seeing the rare white kiwi, Manukura, before she passed. I painted her as a tribute, and I’ve also painted a brown kiwi.

Why do you do what you do? What inspired you to become an artist?

I’ve been an artist my whole life, always knowing from a young age that I’d be immersed in it. It’s no longer just a hobby but nearly a full-time career alongside my graphic design job. What I love most about art is creating something beautiful from nothing and evoking emotions in people through subtle messages in my work. I also appreciate the flexible and varied lifestyle; one week I might be hosting paint parties, and the next I could be preparing a collection of artworks for a show/market or online sales. I have many future goals on the horizon.
