Meet Angela Maritz

Angela Maritz is a contemporary artist living and working in Tauranga, New Zealand. Working primarily with acrylic and incorporating mixed media, she creates expressive paintings that explore colour, movement, memory and the emotions that shape how we experience the world.

For Maritz, painting is a way of expressing what can be difficult to articulate in words. Rather than beginning with a fixed image, she allows a feeling to guide the work, with colour, gesture and mark-making shaping its direction. Her approach shifts with her subject and state of mind, moving between florals, landscapes, figurative paintings and layered abstraction. The result is a body of work united not by a single subject, but by a distinctive visual language that is recognisably her own.

Her paintings balance suggestion with recognition, inviting viewers to bring their own experiences and interpretations to the work. She is interested in paintings that hold the eye, reveal unexpected details over time and, at times, offer a renewed sense of freedom and aliveness.

Maritz's work is held in private and corporate collections worldwide. She exhibits internationally, including in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Singapore and London, and undertakes commissions for private collectors and commercial spaces. Her projects include a five-year commission to create original artwork for the suites of The Peninsula Hotel in Cape Town. She was one of four artists selected from New Zealand and Australia for Avis Car Hire's Art of Discovery campaign and received a full scholarship to attend the 2024 Venice Biennale's Contemporary Art Development program. Her practice also extends into fashion through a collaboration with a New York designer, translating her artwork onto scarves.

Alongside her studio practice, Maritz founded an artist collective and speaks at events and schools, sharing her experience of building a career as a working artist.
